Do you know what is in your makeup?
Until about 5 years ago, I didn’t. And, to be honest, I didn’t really care either. It was simply a way for me to boost my self confidence, after years of having none. Then, I started to pay attention to that tiny little list on the back of the tubes and bottles I was using.
I was in for a rude awakening. I found words I couldn’t even pronounce, let alone know what they meant. It scared me, and I began my hunt for more nature based cosmetics. I found them, but wasn’t happy with what I was finding. Bare Minerals was out there, but at the time it was on late night commercials, and I wasn’t too sure if it would do as good as it claimed. I sure wasn’t going to spend that much money to find out.
I ended up using a few brands that were easily found in stores. They weren’t cheap, but again, I just wasn’t happy with the coverage they provided. I’ll be honest, chemicals starting sneaking their way back into my makeup routine, just so I could cover the sun damage I have. (Back when I was a teenager, there wasn’t the big scare of skin cancer like there is now. I wish there would have been.)
A few months ago, I came across a company called Younique. I really didn’t know much about them, but kept researching. The more I read, the more I liked. They use mineral based pigments, which means they are all natural. They don’t contain fillers that I can’t pronounce. Many of the products are gluten free. All are paraben free, toxin free, cruelty free, and hypoallergenic. I was getting warmed up to the idea of using them.
I had a friend that sold it, but she was about 2000 miles from me. I ordered anyway, and fell in love at first use. The longer I use them, the more I love them. I have honestly never had so many compliments on my makeup, until the past few weeks. I love the fact that I can go out, and feel confident in the way I look. That my major sun damage isn’t showing. That instead of noticing my flaws – real or self-imagined – people are noticing beautiful things about me.
Anyway, this long post is all so that I can show you what I look like without makeup, compared to just the foundations from Younique. On the left, is my lovely, sun damaged self. On the right, is after about 5 minutes of putting on makeup. I used the BB Cream in Medium, Powder Pigment Concealer in Frivolous as an all over, Fierce as a contour, and Fresh as a highlighter. I look years younger. These photos are not retouched, but are taken by my phone, so they are not professional quality by any means.
I also want to point out, I think this is the first time in my life since about the age of 14, that I have intentionally taken a picture of myself without makeup…..I also apologize for it looking like a mugshot. Evidently, I need more practice with my camera phone and selfies….lol
